About 'football game college'|EA: College football video game series will continue - USA TODAY
Saturday marks the 110th meeting in a college football classic simply known as the Army Navy Game. And although the respective schools, the Military Academy and the Naval Academy, do not have the vaunted rosters and programs of old, that ceases to matter during the last game of the season, where the schools compete for honor, glory, and pride. For these two schools, Saturday's contest is The Game. Army and Navy do not play for a little brown jug or a crystal trophy, nor are they encumbered with a nickname like the Red River Shootout, the Backyard Brawl, or the Iron Bowl. It is simply the Army Navy Game. And they play for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, awarded to them by the President of the United States. Who else can say that? This writer grew up in a house with an extended family of military men. Every branch of the military was represented. Most of my uncles were in the Army, but when the game came on and everyone gathered around my grandfather's television or we sat in my parents' living room, I, my brother, and my father were in full support of the Navy. Why? Simply because my father was in the Navy. And proud of his two years of service. Two of the best years of his life, he'll still assure you. And so began a tradition of being outnumbered by fans of other schools and teams that I have never been able to escape. I was a Dallas Cowboys fan in the midst of Oakland Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Miami Dolphins fans (which only proves I grew up in the 1970s). I was a Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox fan in the midst of Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cincinnati Reds fans. And I was an Alabama Crimson Tide fan in the middle of West Virginia, where you either supported the two major home colleges, WVU and Marshall, or Ohio State. And I was a Navy fan. Over the years, I've watched thousands of midshipmen and cadets line the sidelines and cheer from the crowds during the annual meetings. There is a proud pageantry to this game, a fierce competitiveness that underscores a respect for the game and for the opposing academies, and there is a sense of commonality and union that can be felt by ballplayers and fans alike, no matter how different each might be, no matter how hard one side strives to defeat the other. The Army Navy Game is America's game and, as Kristian Siuta of the Bleacher Report reminds us, is the "purest rivalry" in college football. It is truly an American event. Through the years, I have missed not one game and make it a point to watch, just like the Indy 500, the first game of baseball season, the Kentucky Derby, and the Super Bowl. The Army Navy Game is a national treasure and one to be honored. And even though little has changed with regard to my viewing companions -- my father-in-law and stepfather-in-law were both in the Army, and my stepsons are tradition-bound to oppose me -- honor it I do. In the 110th match-up Army enters the game as underdogs, looking to bring their record to a .500 plateau. Navy enters the game at 8-4. The teams are independent of conferences so rise or fall on the merits of their season's record. Navy is headed to the Texas Bowl on New Year's Eve, where they will take on the Missouri Tigers. Army would love to defeat their arch rivals to take bragging rites and salvage a somewhat lackluster season. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. EST on December 12. Navy leads the series 53-49-7. Navy has won the last seven games and has taken 10 of the last 12 contests. But it is a rivalry and nothing is certain in a rivalry. Still, there are rivalries and then there are rivalries. But there is only one truly national college football game -- The Army Navy Game. ****** Sources: ESPN.go.com |
